METHOD ONE
Make a Love-expression lantern from an old brochure in less than 20 minutes!

WHAT YOU NEED
First check that you have all the materials and tools you need as shown
in this picture:

-
spray mount or glue
-
scotchtape
-
old brochure of 4 panels would be ideal
-
disposable chopsticks or balsa-wood sticks
-
heart-shaped templates
-
paper knife or scissors
-
wire-cutter
-
wire
-
cutting Board
STEPS TO TAKE
STEP 1
If the old brochure you are using has only 2 or 3 panels you will need to attach with scotch-tape the additional page(s) to produce 4 panels to make this lantern.

STEP 2   STEP 3

Cover with decorative or coloured paper of your choice one side of the brochure that is going to be the external surface of your lantern. Use “spray-mount” to glue the paper on for best effect.   With a pencil, draw “hearts” on the decorative paper . Use templates to make sure the shapes are of the same size throughout. Then cut out the heart-shapes along the pencil outline. Your lantern light will now be shining through the “heart-shaped windows” you have created.

STEP 4   STEP 5

Turn over to the back surface and cut the chopsticks to match the length of each side of the perimeter of your lantern so that when the sticks are joined, they form a frame for the lantern. Glue the sticks to the back surface of your lantern. When all the sticks are glued up, the back of your lantern looks like this.

STEP 6
Join panel one and panel four with scotch-tape – and you’d have a lantern – one recycled from your old brochure! To hang up your lantern, attach two wires as shown, then adjust length of wire to hang where you want it to be.

METHOD TWO
WHAT YOU NEED

- four pieces of oaktag, 5.5 X 7 inches (14 X 18cm)
- four pieces of handmade paper, 6 X 8 inches (16 X 20cm)
- pencil - awl
- metal ruler - thin ribbon
- craft knife - large needle
- strong glue - scissors
- plastic modelling material - and a creative mind!

HOW TO MAKE A LANTERN

STEP 1       STEP 2
Draw a rectangle 0.6 inches (1.5cm) in from edges of oaktag. Use ruler and craft knife to cut away centre of oaktag to make a frame. Place frame in centre of handmade paper and glue. Fold paper edges over frame and glue. Repeat process with three other frames.

STEP 3 STEP 4
Mark dots at intervals down long sides of each frame as shown. Hold over plastic modelling material. Pierce a hole at each dot with an awl. Place two frames with right sides facing out. Using thin ribbon, sew loosely up one side and down again. Knot ends. Add third and fourth frames in the same way to complete the square.

STEP 5 STEP 6
Tie two long ribbons to the ribbons at opposite corners. To hang lantern, attach small loop of ribbon around long ribbons. Completed!
